The perfect boating region for...

Nature Lovers

Canal Rhone au Rhin, near Strasbourg

Truly a unique region of France on the western border of Germany, the Alsace-Lorraine-Saarland is rife with lush forests and expanses of marshland that support a host of wild creatures. The Delta de la Sauer is just one of the 21 nature reserves in the area.

History & Heritage

Man and Woman dancing in traditional Alsation dress

Grand castles and soaring cathedrals in Germany’s Saarbrücken and France’s Strasbourg signify the rich historic past of the region. Whilst enjoying the history and heritage of these waters, be sure to see the Basilica St. Johann in Saarbrücken and Rohan Palace in Saverne.

Gastronomy

Sausages and Saurkraut

In Alsace-Lorraine-Saarland, the pig is known as le seigneur cochon (the noble pig). Obviously, pork is big on Alsace boating holidays. Choucroute alsacienne, for example, is sauerkraut with sausage, pork or ham. Try tourte, a pie with ham, bacon or ground pork with eggs and leeks.

A careful look at an Alsace-Lorraine regional map reveals two intersecting waterways: the Canal de la Marne au Rhin and The Canal des Houillères de la Sarre. They form an L-shape from Germany’s Saarbrücken south down the Saar Valley and east to Strasbourg, France, known as the city of roads. These two fabulous waterways create an ideal setting for your boating holidays in Alsace.

The Marne au Rhin runs 314 kilometres (195 miles) from Vitry-le-Francois to Strasbourg, passing through the amazing Arzviller transversal inclined plane completed in 1968. It replaced 17 locks and raises boats 45 metres (147 feet). The Canal des Houillères de la Sarre dates from 1860 and extends 64 kilometres (about 40 miles) from Saarbrücken to the Marne au Rhin.

Whilst France expanded its canal network in the west, with fledgling efforts starting in the 1500s, the east languished. Finally, as the Industrial Revolution hit full swing, construction of the Canal de la Marne au Rhin began in 1838 and was finished in 1855. The canal’s purpose was to link Paris with Alsace and Germany. By the 1950s, thousands of tractor-towed, 300-tonne wooden barges (bilanders) plied the canal, but the traffic died out in the 1970s. Leisure craft rule now.

We've partnered up with some of the best local businesses from the towns and villages in the Alsace to help you get the most out of your Le Boat holiday.

Discover our range of exclusive offers, only available to Le Boat customers.

Le Boat gave us a a great onboarding and orientation to the boat, including a "test drive." Since we are small boat owners this was helpful to understand the nuances of the larger cabin cruiser Horizon 1 . The only caveat to the service is the change of end point service. Due to high waters we could not end in Boofzheim. Instead we offboarded in Kraft. There was NO ONE in Kraft, no electricity, no services at all! Our phones did not work due to a European service carrier outage so we were completely stranded!! LeBoat should have made some arrangements for those several boats ending in Kraft to get to the train station. It could have been a travel disaster with missed train, missed flight etc. Fortunately for us, another group had made arrangements for a private driver and they asked him to return for us! I absolutely loved everything about my LeBoat vacation! It is the only way to travel for me! I am already planning my next trip!

FOR THE MOST PART, Le Boat staff responded promptly with what I needed. There were times, tho, that I had to do a follow up email to get a response. The only other constructive thing I would suggest is to have a phone number that is monitored overnight. Our toilets broke down late at night and there was no one available to suggest to us how to fix the problem if we could have. Even the next day, there was no response to our messages for several hours. Aside from a few equipment issues, our week was exactly as wonderful as we had hoped (and what I "sold" to our friends). It was relaxing, it was beautiful, it was unique, and it was memorable.

We were meet early by Maureen at about 15:45, who was very helpful with canal instructions. She ordered a taxi to take us to the market. The boat was ready and stocked with the ordered previsions we had asked for. We were given an instructional boat operation tour by a very nice gentleman. Don't remember his name. Loved the boat, the scenery, the tunnels, the lift, the locks, and all of the food and the stops in the cities along the way.
